Labourers’ Local 183 Scholarship Trust Fund is deeply committed to fostering the growth and development of our students. We firmly believe that post-secondary education is not just a privilege but a crucial stepping stone to success.
Since 2006, the fund has bestowed an impressive 1,137 scholarships, amounting to a remarkable total of over $9.6 million, empowering hardworking members, their children and their grandchildren to pursue higher education and realize their academic dreams.

Make sure to follow these guidelines to ensure your eligibility!
To be eligible to apply, you must meet the following criteria:
- You are a student who has either graduated from an Ontario High School, is currently attending, or will graduate from an equivalent program.
- You plan to attend or are already enrolled in a full-time recognized post-secondary institution (such as a college or university) in the upcoming academic year.
- You are the member, child or grandchild of a Local 183 member or retiree member who is in good standing.
Be aware of the following guidelines regarding the LiUNA Local 183 Scholarship:
- Sponsoring Member Requirement: The sponsoring member must be in good standing and actively working or retired at the time you submit your application.
- Re-application for Non-recipients: If you applied for a Local 183 Scholarship previously and were not awarded one, you are eligible to re-apply. If approved, the scholarship will be for the remaining years of your planned program.
- Previous Approved Recipients: If you have received a Local 183 Scholarship in the past, you are not eligible to apply again, even if you did not receive the full amount of your previous award.
- Member Spouses: Please note that spouses of members are not eligible.

The Labourers’ Local 183 Scholarship Trust Fund is designed to assist Local 183 members, their children, and their grandchildren obtain a high-quality post-secondary education.
An Independent Academic Committee will evaluate all submissions based on established criteria. Candidates will receive written notifications about the Committee’s decision, which will be mailed to the address provided in their application. Notifications will be sent out by the end of September each year.
After all candidates have been notified, an awards dinner will be held to honour successful applicants, during which the scholarships will be formally presented.
Please note that awards are subject to administrative requirements set by the Board of Trustees, and the amounts awarded may vary. All application details and personal information will remain strictly confidential.

Each year, a number of scholarships will be awarded to successful applicants, as determined by an Independent Academic Committee.
The Board of Trustees will determine the scholarship duration and financial amounts based on the number of applicants and available funds.
One scholarship is exclusively set aside for a successful applicant with a disability or disabilities.
Grading Criteria
An Independent Academic Committee will assess all scholarship applications based on the criteria that you can find here:
- Applicant Information Form: Fill out the form in full and attach any relevant documents related to your community activities, paid work, or other pertinent information. If you’re applying through the disability scholarship, please attach any supporting documentation.
- Essay Submission: Write an essay on one of the topics listed below.
- Academic Transcript: Provide a final official academic transcript from your most recent secondary school, college, or university. This transcript must include your final marks; please note that simply stating the number of credits is insufficient.
- Acceptance Letter: Include a copy of your letter of acceptance from the college or university where you will be studying in the upcoming academic year.
- Additional Documentation: Include any other relevant documents such as resume, reference letters, awards, or recognitions.
Scholarships will be awarded considering these factors, and are not solely based on academic grades.

Essay Guidelines
- Choose one of the provided topics for your essay.
- Your essay should be no longer than 500 words.
- Include research-based information as well as your personal opinions.
- Properly cite all sources used for research.
- Format your essay as follows: type and double-space it. If you are unable to type, you can neatly print your work, ensuring it is double-spaced.
Structure:
- Your essay must consist of six paragraphs
- 1 Introductory Paragraph
- 4 Body Paragraph
- 1 Concluding Paragraph
Essay Topics:
Once applications open, candidates will be invited to select one of four available essay topics, which will be provided at the time of application. Applicants must choose only one topic and respond by submitting an essay that follows the guidelines outlined below, including length, formatting, research requirements, and structure.
